Abstract

In this work, the dehydrated calyx of Hibiscus sabdariffa was used to synthesize itsprecursors, which were designated as Washed Hibiscus (WH), Magnetized Hibiscus(MH), and Washed Magnetized Hibiscus (WMH). The purpose of these syntheses was thepreparation of alternative adsorbent materials to be used for the extraction of cobalt andcopper in aqueous matrix. The material in nature form, Hibiscus, and the derivatives—WH, MH, and WMH where submited to characterization through X-ray diffraction(XRD) to analyze crystallinity and identify the phases present in the materials. Energydispersive X-ray fluorescence (EDXRF) provided detailed information about the chemicalcomposition, revealing the predominant elements in the materials. In addition, tests wereconducted to determine the point of zero charge (pHpzc), which is crucial for understandingthe adsorption behavior across different pH ranges. These techniques enabled a deeperunderstanding of the properties of the developed materials, demonstrating that the appliedtreatments were effective in modifying and enhancing the hibiscus’s adsorptive capacitiesfor cobalt and copper ions.
