The microporous calcium hexaluminate ceramic compound (CaO.6Al2 O3 or CA6 ) excels in applications such as thermal insulation, industrial furnace and boiler coatings, molten metal, and gas filter, among others. CA6 is commercially produced by the α-Al2 O3 -CaCO3 route generating CO2 gas emissions in the environment during the burning process. Therefore, this work evaluated the production of CA6 by alternative routes using different sources of alumina (α-Al2 O3 and ρ-Al2 O3 ) and calcium (CaCO3 , Ca(OH)2 and CaO) by the direct molding technique. The raw materials were characterized as size distribution of their particles, as well as suspensions as to the time of gripping, that is, the workability time until the final hardening (stuck). The products obtained after sintering at 1550 and 1600 °C were characterized for diameter and thickness shrinkage, crystalline phases, and microstructure. This work showed that CA6 can be produced through the direct molding technique, using the proposed alternative sources for both alumina and calcium. α-Al2 O3 presented finer particles when compared to hydraulic alumina, as well as CaCO3. Compared to Ca(OH)2 and especially to CaO. CaO was the calcium source with
the greatest accelerating effect on setting time, being intensified in α-Al2 O3 suspensions. The product produced by the α-Al2 O3 route showed greater packing in its microstructure with grains with a high aspect ratio, thinner and longer when compared to the production by ρ-Al2 O3.
