Abstract

Bioactive glasses like BG-58S (58 SiO2, 33 CaO, 9 P2O5, wt%), once transplanted, promote a biological reaction at the material interface that stimulates cell proliferation, gene response, and the formation of a bond with living tissues, inhibiting bacterial growth due to changes in the pH of the environment. These glasses, in turn, assist in the formation of a biologically active layer of hydroxyapatite on the surface of the BG. Production routes of BG through the sol-gel method have evaluated the influence of different reagents used in the synthesis on the characteristics of the obtained powder. In this context, the aim of this study was to assess the influence of reagents in the synthesis of BG-58S to achieve better properties for application in bone regeneration. Eight different compositions were prepared, in which the phosphorus source (TEP or AF), the addition or absence of solvent (ethanol), and the presence of a porogenic agent (Pluronic F-127) were varied. The compositions were characterized regarding the calcination temperature through thermogravimetric analysis, phases through X-ray diffraction, chemical composition through Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, porosity, and specific area through nitrogen volumetry (BET). The use of the porogenic agent under the conditions used in this work was not effective in obtaining micellar structures as pore formers, requiring adjustments to the other processing conditions, allowing the obtaining of mesoporous compositions.
