Abstract

The miniaturization of consumer goods has driven the development of nanostructured materials, and with this, the production of nanostructured precursors based on polyacrylonitrile by electrospinning has been gaining ground in this area, and consequently, the thermal conversion of this polymeric material into carbonaceous material. This work evaluates the thermal conversion of polyacrylonitrile nanofibers into carbon nanofibers through heat treatment at temperatures from 300 °C to 550 °C in an inert environment.
The mass loss generated during the process and the thermogravimetric events occurring in the study temperature range were evaluated, where it was observed that thermal events occur at milder temperatures when compared to those reported in the literature for microstructured materials. The morphology of the nanofibers was evaluated by scanning electron microscopy, where it was observed that with the conversion of the polymeric material, there is an increase in the roughness of the fibers. The crystalline phases of the resulting compounds after heat treatment were evaluated by X-ray diffraction spectroscopy. The results obtained are promising. However, control of the treatment chamber must be
rigorous to minimize excessive mass loss due to pyrolysis of the material.
