Industrial effluents containing classes of synthetic pesticides such as the more stable and toxic organochlorines for the environment and the pyrethroids that stand out for acting quickly against various types of insects while being less toxic to mammals, can pose risks to the environment and human health if improperly discharged. The objective of this study was to investigate the versatility of microorganisms and the numerous advantages associated with filamentous fungi, specifically Cunninghamella echinulata ATCC 9244, applied as a biocatalyst in the study of industrial effluent bioremediation from a pesticide production plant. To this end, phytotoxicity assays were performed using cucumber seeds (Cucumis sativus) and the determination of COD (Chemical Oxygen Demand) by the closed reflux method to evaluate the treatment efficiency. The treated effluent samples at 24, 48, 72, and 96 hours were non-toxic to cucumber seeds, showing no statistically significant differences in seed germination parameters and root development. For
COD analysis, a reduction of 91.7% in the pollutant load of the effluent was observed within the first 24 hours of exposure to fungal biofilms, reaching 99.7% at 96 hours. Fungal bioremediation proved to be an effective method in accelerating the degradation of pesticides, as evidenced by its high percentage of removal of toxic compounds.
